President Obama signs pay-equity legislation!

Friday, January 30th, 2009

President Obama, you rock!  You have done so much already, and you haven’t even been in office 10 days!

Excerpts from the article:

“Equal pay is by no means just a women’s issue, it’s a family issue,” Obama said. “And in this economy, when so many folks are already working harder for less and struggling to get by, the last thing they can afford is losing part of each month’s paycheck to simple and plain discrimination.”

Obama cited Census Bureau figures that show women still earn about 78 cents for every dollar men get for doing equivalent jobs, and it’s even less for women of color.

President Obama’s speeches help many in Japan learn English!

Wednesday, January 28th, 2009

Wow, Mr. President, not only do your speeches inspire millions around the globe, but now hundreds of thousands of Japanese people are learning English because of them! Many of President Obama’s speeches have been compiled into:

An English-language textbook, “The Speeches of Barack Obama,”[which] has sold more than 400,000 copies in two months, a big hit in a country where few hit novels sell more than a million copies a year.

Here are some more interesting parts of the article:

“Speeches by presidents and presidential candidates are excellent as listening tools to learn English, because their contents are good and their words are easy to catch,” said Yuzo Yamamoto of Asahi Press, which produced the best-selling text book.

“Obama’s is especially so. His speeches are so moving, and he also uses words such as ‘yes, we can,’ ‘change’ and ‘hope’ that even Japanese people can memorize,” he said.

Speeches by President George W. Bush and former nominee John Kerry’s four years ago did not have the same appeal, however, and nor do those made by Japanese politicians, Yamamoto said.

“In Japan, we don’t have politicians who have such a positive influence. That’s why we have to turn to a foreign president for someone in whom to place our hopes.”

According the to the article, the book surpassed and became the number one seller on Amazon’s website in Japan– Does President Obama get a daily briefing on the positive impact he is having on lives across the world? You go, Mr. President!

Will Obama “be held to a different standard because of his skin color?”

Tuesday, January 27th, 2009

Interesting article questioning whether or not President Obama’s race will play a role in how his work will be “judged.”

Here is an excerpt from the article:

Andrew Rojecki, co-author of “The Black Image in the White Mind: Media and Race in America…” says people who say  Obama isn’t going to be held to a different standard because of his skin color didn’t pay attention to his campaign.

He says Obama had to deal with challenges that other candidates didn’t have to face. Obama’s run for office was almost ended by his association with his minister, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, whose incendiary sermons shocked many.

But Republican presidential nominee John McCain’s relationship with the Rev. John Hagee, who was accused of anti-Semitism, never threatened to end his campaign, Rojecki says.

Michelle Obama likened to Princess Diana by some.

Monday, January 26th, 2009

Michelle Obama is a fashionista as was Princess Diana. However, more important parallels can be drawn between these two famous women. Michelle Obama said that her “primary focus for the first year will be making sure that the kids make it through the transition.” She also “promised to make the welfare of military families serving in Iraq and Afghanistan a priority” as well as making an impact on her local community in DC. Although Princess Diana was often praised for her fashion sense, she too focused on raising her children and helping the less fortunate.

Sunday, January 25th, 2009

Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on your take on the gown), “Jason Wu, the designer of Michelle Obama’s frothy, cream, one-shouldered gown, won’t be reproducing the look for the masses.” However, if you thought Michelle Obama’s dress looked hot (as Paris Hilton would say) or if you found yourself coveting her look at the inaugural balls or if you want to emulate her style or for whatever reason want a similar dress, you can now buy one at This store will start shipping the dress on March 15.  The dress is selling for $320.

Does Obama have an identical twin brother in Jakarta, Indonesia?

Saturday, January 24th, 2009

No, President Obama does not have an identical twin in Jakarta, Indonesia. However, “Indonesian photographer Ilham Anas” has recently become rich & famous because from “some angles [he] bears a resemblance to the new U.S. president.” I hope he does not move to Vegas and become an Obama impersonator.

Thanks Tim for sending this info my way!

Obama will get a “secure BarackBerry.” Cost = $3,350.

“The decision to allow Obama to keep a smartphone is ‘a compromise that allows him to stay in touch with senior staff and a small group of personal friends,’ Gibbs [House Press Secretary] told the media in his first press conference since the inauguration.”

“‘Use will be limited and the security is enhanced to ensure his ability to communicate but to do so effectively,’ Gibbs also said. ‘And to do so in a way that is protected.’ ”

“There are also concerns that mobile devices such as the BlackBerry, which contain built-in GPS technology, could be hacked, revealing the president’s location within a few feet.”

I hope they remove any GPS capabilities!!!

Friday, January 23rd, 2009

[E! Online – Malia and Sasha Obama Are Such Dolls(E! Online)]

“Beanie Babies maker Ty has launched two new dolls for their TyGirlz Collection—’Sweet Sasha’ and ‘Marvelous Malia.'”

“No word on how President Barack Obama or first lady Michelle Obama feel about their girls getting all dolled-up.”

If you were the president, would you be flattered or disturbed that someone made dolls that looked like and were name after your kids? Hmm….
